What is the story behind the emergence of OCEANIC?

MD: The relevant question should be that how I came into Oceanic. Actually, my father had a music shop in Pune and it was amongst the first few music shops in Pune. It was way back in the early thirties. He was running the shop and from my childhood itself I was very much interested into music, I used to listen a lot of music and interested in the technical aspects of music and so I got into Oceanic. I grew up with music .

Does your father has his shop till date?

MD: Yes, that shop is now run by my elder brother .

The reason behind a name like 'OCEANIC' ?

MD: Osho .

So you are a follower of Osho .

MD: Yes.

The name 'Oceanic ' has a line under it called 'sound and vision ' what does that mean? What is your vision?

MD: Vision means Video . Sound and Vision means Audio and Video .

Do you have any other plans for your shop ' Oceanic' ?

MD: No . There are no such plans right now.

There are many music shops in Pune , how is Oceanic different from the others?


MD: Oceanic has music which is approved by me , the important thing is the Quality of Music over here . Its all original . The music which I think is appropriate , I have that music over here. Only quality music. Oceanic has 70-80 % non mainstream music and that is what makes it different from the other music shops . As I said , all music here is selected by me , I have only good quality music over here.

What is the type of music you like?

MD: I like music which is not mainstream music . About 80% music in Oceanic is non-mainstream music . Any music that is not synthesized , I like that type of music .I don't like synthesized or electrified music or artificially created music . I like only Pure music .

What do you feel about the remixes and the DJ stuff that is popular nowadays?

MD: I am totally against the remixes . It ruins the original music . Some of them are ok but most of them are just spoiling up the original songs.

Tell me what is your collection ?

MD: In our collection we have Rock , Western , Indian , Classical rock, Jazz , Indian Pop ,western classical , Indian classical , vocals , instrumentals , spiritual music , etc .

Is there any room where people can hear music?

MD: Yes, we have a room where stereos and home theatre systems are installed so we have a demonstration room .

Do you have any international music in your shop which is not made or available in India?

MD: Yes , we import music . We get some of the albums and music from outside India .We have some imported music .

Do you sell and buy music online?

MD: We do buy some music online but we do not sell it online . I really want to do online selling of music. I get many orders for music by e-mail .

You had a stall at Shisha Cafe during the Jazz festival.

MD: Actually , he is a friend of mine and he asked me to have a stall over there so I had my stall over there . I usually don't go anywhere but since he requested for a stall , I agreed .

Tell me about the collection at the stall in Shisha cafe.

MD: It was all jazz and classical collection there .

On your door there is a poster giving information on upcoming music concerts so you have that often?

MD: As I said , I don't go anywhere people come up with these things and I put them up only if I think it is good . And I don't put up stalls at events , jazz festival I had a stall only because he's my friend and requested me for that.

Apart from Music cds, cassettes , DVD's, VCD's , what else do you have for sale in 'Oceanic ' ?

MD : We have music accessories for sale also .

What are these accessories?

MD: Music accessories like Stereo Music Systems , Home theatres , Projectors , Screens , VCD players , DVD players , Stereo Amplifiers ,Valve Amplifiers , Dynamic speakers ( Loud Speakers ) , electrostatic speakers , accessories , headphones , Audio -video cables ,etc .

Does Oceanic have only music or do you have collection of movies also?

MD: We have Movies also . DVD's of movies . Hindi as well as english movies are available here .

Do you have any regional music in your collection?

MD: Yes . There are some regional albums with us . We sell regional music also .
