About the Artist :

Born in Martinique in 1960, Paris based Mario Canonge a central and essential element in Caribbean music, but above all an ambassador for Martinique’s musical heritage throughout the world.

In a career lasting for nearly 20 years, Mario Canonge has so far given half a dozen albums. He has a thirst for different musical experiences and exchanges, and has put his talents to work for the most diverse styles and cultures, from Cape Verde to Haiti, from Cuba to his native French West Indies.

“There s a relation between my birthplace and all the other places in the world, and I want to try to bring out this relation in music”, says Canonge. This is the durable way to fight against that invisible predator, globalization and to have done with the idea of identity as coming from a single root.

Unapologetically jazz-based, his compositions are becoming a means of opening up to the ‘other’. Cultural blending comes to represent a basic element of the music, and even a cultural and social achievement. This is a vision of the world essentially based on the notion of ‘diversity’, as opposed to ‘universality’
