Many musicians who have
not played jazz think that when jazz musicians improvise all they
play is a random set of notes and chords. I remember a musician
once tell me “ jazz improvisation is real easy – one
just has to start on one note and then go chromatically up and down
the keyboard stopping at certain notes and changing direction up
and down the keyboard as often as possible.” Well how I wish
it was as simple as that. Every musician who has tried to improvise
knows that the art of improvising is the ultimate musical challenge
demanding one’s total musicianship at all times.
Over
the past few years I have been approached by many Classical pianists
and also many other Pop and Rock musicians who want to play a bit
of Jazz. Most had tried learning from the various “How to
play jazz piano….” books and other material available
in the market today. They however had not been very successful as
it is difficult to pick up the fundamentals of jazz improvisation
from books alone.
Today
the subject of jazz improvisation is very vast and covers a myriad
of topics, styles, techniques and many people give up even before
getting started. Well, that’s usually because they don’t
know where to begin. This workshop aims to bridge this gap and help
Classical Pianists understand the way we, jazz musicians, approach
our music.
I
am classically trained and a lot of the suggestions will be from
my own personal experiences as I made the transition from classical
to jazz piano.
The workshop will be divided into two parts
In the first part we will discuss basic jazz concepts. In the second
part participants are welcome to try out the concepts (on pianos)
discussed in part one.
Participants
will be given a hand-out detailing material covered at the workshop
along with a list of reference material for further study of improvisation.
